How To Become A Tow Truck Driver

Want to become a roadside hero, but don’t yet have your own superhero cape?

Here’s how you should go about becoming a tow truck expert, like the ones at edmtowing.ca, and set your career in towing well on the road to success!

STEP ONE – A CLEAN DRIVING LICENSE

You need to be over the age of eighteen to work as a tow truck driver in Canada. You also should possess a clean driving license.

However, these are just the minimum requirements for the job.

What’s not explicitly stated, but should be, is that you also need to have a calm demeanour, be a good driver and have a cool head.

You need to be prepared to do a lot of driving, a lot of sitting in traffic and being able to negotiate the demands of the general public.

You also will be responsible for the maintenance of your own vehicle, as well as that of others.

STEP TWO – APPLYING

To make your application to become a tow truck driver you should apply through your nearest License and Permit Issuing Office.

You should have proof of ID and there is a fee for the application. The amount varies depending on where in the country you live.

If your application succeeds, you will get your Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration certificate.

STEP THREE – THE TESTS

There are two tests you need to take, before you will be awarded your certificate. This is the road test and the knowledge test.

The road test is your practical driving test. If you live in Ontario, you will use the Official Truck Handbook to help you with the written exam.

STEP FOUR – LEARNING MAINTENANCE

Naturally, you will have to know how to repair and maintain a vehicle. So educate yourself in the techniques you will need for your career.

This will include things such as changing a tire at the roadside, replacing a battery, unlocking doors and knowing how to do jump starts.

In fact, the more that you can demonstrate to a potential employer, the better.

STEP FIVE – KNOWING THE LAND

As a tow truck driver, you cannot rely on GPS to help you find your way. You need to know the area that you will be servicing like the back of your hand.

There will be times when your GPS cannot work and you should know exactly where you are and how to get to your clients- quickly.

STEP SEVEN – FINDING A TOW COMPANY

When you have successfully completed these steps, you are ready to find a company to work for.

You can start to apply for positions, just as soon as your CVOR license comes through.

Remember, the more skills that you can bring to your application, the more chance you have of securing employment.

And soft skills are just as important as the technical ones.

It is vital that, as a tow truck driver, you bring calm and a cool head to a potentially fraught situation. Being able to diffuse tension and put your clients’ minds at ease are vital skills.

If you can deliver all these qualities, you are sure to be successful in your newfound career!
